Shinzen Young - Explains MINDFULNESS - Google Tech Talk January 2012
LISTEN Shinzen Young explain the real benefits of using MINDFULNESS.
2. He discusses how Mindfulness and Science can be brought together in a collaborative enterprise to advance both what we know about our mind and how we can use such knowledge to improve well-being.
Shinzen Young first became interested in Asian culture as a teenager. He then enrolled in the Ph.D. program in Buddhist Studies at the University of Wisconsin, and completed extensive training across Asia in each of the three major Buddhist meditative traditions: Vajrayana, Zen, and Vipassana.
On return to the United States, Shinzen worked tirelessly to coordinate Eastern internal science and Western technological science - with the aim of maximising the satisfaction and contentment which ordinary people can experience in day-to-day living. He was awarded an Honorary Doctorate degree for his exemplary work - from the Institute of Transpersonal Psychology.
New Ways of Dealing with Pain
Over the years Shinzen has developed innovative techniques for Pain Management.
He initially drew on his own personal experience of physical pain - such as experienced within his intense periods of meditation in Asia, and as he observed during shamanic ceremonies within tribal cultures.
He went on to develop and refine effective Mindfulness-Based Techniques to specifically help people in pain to deal with the overwhelming experience of intense pain - for both acute pain and chronic pain. Where people suffer the insidious and often recalcitrant chronic pain, the pain itself often develops what appears to be a "life of its own". Chronic pain can be very difficult to alter or control if treatment techniques and medications are restricted only to what is available within current Western Medicine.
Shinzen is widely recognised and respected for his continuing dedication to running Meditation Retreats in the mindfulness tradition throughout North America and elsewhere across the world. He has helped to establish many meditation centres and continues to contribute globally to teaching programs on Mindfulness and Meditation. He continues in active research to reveal the Science which underlies the consistent positive benefits observed in the lives of the growing number of people who use Mindfulness in their daily lives all over the world.
